Event Title: Teaching World Englishes: Classroom Design for Respectful and Inclusive English Speakers
Presenter: Minji Kim
Location: Online (Zoom link will be emailed to the address provided at registration)
Date & Time: Wednesday, December 10, 2025 | 04:30–05:30 PM (MST)
Event Description:
In today’s globalized society, English is a tool for communication among speakers with diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. However, language hierarchies, accent bias, and a narrow focus on “standard” English persist in many educational settings.
This workshop introduces classroom practices from a World Englishes unit designed to raise students’ awareness of global English varieties and foster respectful, inclusive communication.
Participants will explore:
• Teaching strategies and classroom activities
• Student reflections and co-created projects (e.g., multilingual magazine)
• Survey data from university writing courses (Spring & Summer 2025)
• Practical tips and adaptable resources to integrate World Englishes into their own classrooms
This session emphasizes culturally sustaining pedagogy and invites open dialogue on empowering multilingual learners through inclusive English education.
